Been there photo competition March 2010

The theme for the first month of spring was 'the great outdoors', with the finalists capturing the beauty and power of Mother Nature

Been there comp March: Brighton swimming
The winning picture: Swimming in the sea in Brighton in December
Judge Natalie Mayer: Isn't the outdoors just bloody great! Splashing about in some pretty tempestuous waves on what looks like a cold, but splendid day. This photo has a wonderful perspective, you really feel a sense of the noise of the waves and the pebbles as the tide sucks up and down the beach. And the lovely movement of the people caught in action, I can almost hear their screams. I think the photographer probably got his feet wet, but it was well worth it.

Been there comp March: Atlas mountain, Morocco
Runner upI took the photo in a small village in Morocco, on the way to the Sahara. It shows the Atlas mountains reflected in the bathroom's mirrors. For me, it represents beauty in the mundane.
Natalie Mayer: I like this clever interpretation of the theme. A slight shift in angle by the photographer may have eliminated the reflection of the dark wall on the left, giving us a cleaner reflection of the landscape behind. Same goes for the tops of the doors behind, the photo would have been improved by cleverly eliminating some of the distracting elements. Still, a fun shot and this photographer should be proud.

Been there comp March: Deck chair in Dubai
Runner up: We went camping in the desert near Dubai and found this old deck chair. Don’t how long it’d been sitting in the great outdoors, but it didn’t look too healthy.
Natalie Mayer: I like looking at this clean, atmospheric image. It is lacking a little something to be a true winner, but it's certainly a well spotted and visually pleasing scene.

Been there comp March: Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls. The power of the falls has been present since the first humans saw it 12,000 years ago. If you visit it today you get a true sense of its glory and our own place in nature.   Photograph: Bryan Pereira/guardian.co.uk
been there march: Tree in a field, Essex
This is my favourite tree on the outskirts of the village of Ridgewell in Essex. I love to go for long walks around there and when I see this tree I always know I'm only five minutes away from a refreshing cuppa.  Photograph: Benjamin Arthur/guardian.co.uk
Been there comp March: Kulusuk, Greenland
One of the most fantastic places I've visited - Kulusuk in East Greenland. The mountains are up to three billion years old and when the water is flat like this the reflections are exquisite. Photograph: Sophie Atkinson/guardian.co.uk
Been there comp March: Hestmann island
As we approached the Arctic Circle by boat, Hestmann Island came into view. This island is named after a knight who turned to stone because of his intense love for a woman - she made him forget the sunrise. It's beautiful in the early morning light. Photograph: Jeanne Tran/guardian.co.uk
been there march: A lake in Estonia

Been there comp March: Barneville Carteret, Normandy
Barneville Carteret, Normandy. The huge expanse of beach and epic sky made me feel free and unenclosed, if a little windswept at times. It's great to enjoy this sort of landscape without too much in the way of company. Photograph: Dave Roberts/guardian.co.uk
Been there comp March: Buttermere, Lake District
Taken about 9.30am on Friday 5 March this year in Buttermere, at the start of a mammoth walk to the tops of the nearby hills. Photograph: Chloe Nast/guardian.co.uk
Been there comp March: Nepalese Himalaya
This shot was taken up in the Nepalese Himalaya at around 4,600m. Having crawled out of our freezing tent starved of sleep and oxygen, we enjoyed 15 minutes of this humbling dawn view before the cloud rose to obscure it. Photograph: Toby Pear/guardian.co.uk
