The Dipper, Loch Tay

This contemporary boathouse by Loch Tay is light but cosy with more than a hint of Nordic style. White walls and wooden floors are set against vintage chests of drawers and an Ercol dining table. Underfloor heating, a logburner and a bathroom with White Company products add luxury, and dramatic waterside views can be enjoyed from the raised kingsize bed.

The Owl House, Garth

At 25 miles, Glen Lyon is one of Scotland’s longest, and prettiest, glens. This renovated cottage at the start of the glen has wooden floors, tongue-and-groove panelling, a top-of-the-range woodburner and sheepskin rugs to make it snug as well as stylish. It’s peppered with owl details – on mugs, cushions and paintings. The village of Fortingall is home to an atmospheric hotel and restaurant (fortingall.com), and halfway up the glen is a walker-friendly tearoom serving plump scones and locally roasted coffee.

Braeside Cottage, Fearnan

An unremarkable timber cottage on the outside, this space has been given a stylish makeover inside. The open-plan living room and kitchen has restful but stylish soft grey furnishings, slate and seagrass floors, an elegant mid-century leather sofa, Cole & Son wallpaper and in the bathroom, a huge designer bath. The south-facing terrace has views of Loch Tay.

The Observatory, Pitlochry

This large cabin feels remote yet is only five minutes’ walk from Pitlochry railway station. Originally built for stargazing in 1906, it’s now a holiday home with Eames chairs, telescope, piano and Bakelite light switches among the vintage furnishings. The back overlooks Loch Faskally and the Grampians and there are lovely walks from the doorstep, including one to the village of Killiecrankie.

Craiganour Lodge, Kinloch Rannoch

Scotland is not short of vast old shooting lodges, all swag curtains and wraparound tweed. This is a stylish, modern alternative overlooking Loch Rannoch and the Schiehallion munro. It is available on a catered basis only, and aimed at large, pampered gatherings: the price includes a chef and a housekeeper, plus all meals and soft drinks.

01738 477504, craiganour.co.uk. Sleeps 18, from £100pp per night
