In 2005 we created Been there to act as a resource for travellers wanting independent advice from people who had experienced interesting and off the beaten tourist trail places. It went from strength to strength, racking up almost 40,000 tips from places as far flung as Thimphu in Bhutan to recommendations for off-the-radar bars and shops in New York City. But then discovering a new or locals-only bar in NYC can seem like a major adventure …

But now it's time to bring Been there up-to-date, and while that technical work goes on how you enter the site's existing competitions will be a little different.

Been there has hosted some amazing competitions over the years, including this year's photo competition with a prize of an expenses-paid trip to Churchill in Manitoba, Canada, on a photo assignment for Guardian Travel. For any photographer, amateur or professional, there are few landscapes quite as dramatic as Manitoba. To enter, we're asking you to head over to GuardianWitness each month to upload your pictures under that month's assignment details. The closing date for entries will be the 24th of each month.

Here's the list of themes for the rest of this year, so you can prepare in advance for each month's competition. All the winning images will displayed at the finalists' exhibition at the Guardian's offices in January 2014 – and the winner of that wins the trip to Canada.
