Holiday ideas: tips and trips

Can you combine culture and relaxing somewhere beautiful? Where are England's best hotels with pools? And where's the best place to beat austerity in Greece?

Take me there: Porto Heli, Greece

It's hard to believe, as you watch the mega-yachts bobbing in the bay at Porto Heli, that Greece is a country in the throes of economic meltdown. This charmed corner of the Aegean will cement its status as a playground for the rich and beautiful with the opening of a slick new resort from the Aman group on 1 September. Perched on a hilltop in the Peloponnese, Amanzoe will offer 38 suites with private pools, a spa, a beach club and, of course, Aman's signature clean lines and cool, understated luxury. It's a short hop by helicopter from Athens, but if that seems too extravagant in this age of austerity, you can always catch a ferry. From €825 a night (amanresorts.com).

Travel clinic: seeking culture and beauty

The dilemma My husband and I would like to go away for our ruby wedding anniversary, but we can't agree on where to go! He's a history buff who loves trawling around museums and castles, whereas my idea of a holiday is relaxing somewhere beautiful. Where can we go that will keep us both happy? Diane and John

Combining history, culture and gorgeous Alpine scenery, Salzburg could hold the key to marital harmony. Attractions such as Mozart's birthplace, the Salzburg Museum and Hitler's mountain hideaway, the Eagle's Nest, will keep your husband happy while you get your fix of scenic splendour and relaxation on day trips to the Salzkammergut lake district, a river cruise on the Salzach, or cable-car ride to the top of the Untersberg mountain.

Book a room at the Bloberger Hof, a charming family-run hotel (blobergerhof.at, doubles from €75) just south of Salzburg, for the best of both worlds – a countryside retreat with mountain views, just a 15-minute bus ride from the city centre.

Don't forget to schedule in a Sound of Music tour (the hotel can organise this) and plenty of stops for coffee and cake – this is Austria, after all. More information at salzburg.info/en.
