All the wind-up radios and torches I've seen are too bulky. Are there any smaller versions on the market?
Freeplay has brought out compact versions of its "environmentally friendly" radio and torch ranges. The AM/FM radio is 20cm long and as well as the crank handle to generate power, its supply is topped up by a slim solar panel. The Freeplay Sherpa "self-sufficient" flashlight is smaller.
Do they work?
Yes. The radio has a telescopic aerial and a 6.5cm speaker, so most FM stations can be picked up with a crystal clarity. The torch has two brightness settings - normal and high beam. Cranking the handle on the back of the radio for 30 seconds should deliver at least 30 minutes of listening time. Winding up the torch for 30 seconds provides at least eight minutes of light.
Does it matter how fast I wind?
Not really, but both products include a new LED "optimum charge level indicator". This green light blinks when you are cranking at the best speed. Fear not, though, as lazier users can cheat - topping up with the mains chargers that Sherpa thoughtfully includes.
How much?
The Freeplay Ranger radio costs £39.99 and the Freeplay Sherpa torch costs £29.99.
