With the exception of Italy nearly all Alpine resorts had new snow this week

With the exception of Italy nearly all Alpine resorts had new snow this week, although the Pyrenees (Font Romeu, 120-150cm) have had spring conditions. In the US, resorts in Oregon and Utah have 50cm of fresh powder.

Last week's winter storms cleared slowly in Val d'Isere (162-190cm), with visibility remaining poor until Monday, when a further snowstorm all but closed the resort. After a glorious sunny spring Sunday here in fully-open Flaine, skiers awoke on Tuesday and Wednesday to heavy snow and the sound of slopes being made safe by avalanche blasting. But the ubiquitous powder has not lasted, because of the high temperatures - up to 10C yesterday.

Swiss Saas Fee (158-384cm) was forced to close its main lifts because of high winds on Wednesday; the off-piste is severely wind blown, while some avalanche risk remains. Murren (150-298cm) added 20cm three days in a row this week, with the SCGB reporting waist-deep powder.

Austria had an outstanding week, with heavy snow in Soll (110-235cm) and Obergurgl (82-250cm, superb powder). Italy had less snow: Cervinia (170-340cm) was windy, Sauze d'Oulx (120-240cm) is sunny.

The last of the snowfalls should clear in France and Italy, but snowfall will continue in Austria until Sunday where Hintertux expects 25cm. It will be generally warm in the Alps, consistent with the steady advance of spring.
