Interview by Tim Wapshott

I lost my heart in… Costa Blanca

Why? Unlike the ex-pat territories in Spain, the Costa Blanca retains much Spanish culture, particularly in the northern mountainous region. Benissa is an enchanting small town with very traditional Spanish streets, and tucked away up in the nearby hills is Pinos, my favourite village, from where there are panoramic views of the mountains and, in the distance, the sea.

The best thing: The family takes priority over all things, and this feels especially prevalent in Costa Blanca. There are no problems taking children into any of the restaurants - it is all very relaxed.

My ideal day: I'm an early riser, so I'd get up and start the day with a coffee in Benissa. I'd play golf in the morning and then have lunch from 1pm until 3pm. I'd take the family to the beach and, later, I would barbecue wonderful local fish for our dinner.

My advice: Check out the coves and miles of straight beach, and take time out to visit Valencia.

Getting there: Benissa is 90km from Alicante airport. easyJet (0870 6 000 000, easyjet.com) flies London- Alicante from £115 return.

Where was your best holiday? Malaysia, for my honeymoon.

Where do you want to go next? I would love to go to South Africa.

What do you never travel without? $100 in cash - it can get you out of all sorts of scrapes.
