Is this something to do with the single currency?

No. It's a website that lists and reviews hundreds of cheap hotels throughout Europe, according to its editor, Tom Meyers.

Throughout Europe?

Well, for Tom's purposes, "throughout" means London, Paris, Rome, Prague, Amsterdam and Florence. But I'm not going to quibble. Tom may have a US audience in mind, but his principal rival is letsgo.com, the wearyingly indefatigable guidebook series that recommends visiting 17 European destinations in a single month. He and his team of freelancers have evidently slept in plenty of cheap hotels, and their reviews are frank and illuminating.

So he isn't paid to include them?

No. Tom wouldn't do that. He has done a few deals with local accommodation specialists so that visitors can book online, but the recommendations are unaffected.

How many are there?

About 25 for each city, listed by district - near Victoria station or near the Vatican, for example. Photos are included, which is welcome and unusual. Tom's perspective is very much that of the tourist rather than the resident; he has an endearing faith in the Underground, however, which he describes as "affordable and reliable". Nonetheless, this is certainly worth a visit if you want to stay in a non-chain hotel on a budget.Twenj.com ("Travelling with Ed and Julie") also has idiosyncratic recommendations for Rome, Bavaria, Switzerland and Colorado.
