First impressions: Seventeenth-century stone farmhouse next to a small church, surrounded by wooded hillsides and overlooking the River Wye. Beamed lounge, inglenook fireplaces, leather chesterfield sofas and friendly, welcoming the owner.

What are the rooms like? Nine rooms (some are suitable for families), seven with ensuite bathrooms, two with showers. Simply furnished with chintz fabrics and old furniture but all mod cons. including colour TV clock/radio, tea/coffee facilities and direct dial telephones.

The bed test: Some rooms have four-posters. Our bed was very comfortable but on the small side for anyone over 6ft.

The bathroom: Compact but with full size bath and shower.

The restaurant: Cosy with large inglenook fireplace and piped classical music. Unpretentious fare all freshly cooked. The wine list includes Monnow wine, made from locally grown grapes. Excellent farmhouse breakfasts.

The bar: Beamed lounge (mind your head as you go in) with a wood-burning stove, leather armchairs, magazines and board games. 'Honesty Bar' in one corner for guests to help themselves to drinks.

What is there to see nearby? The ruins of Tintern Abbey are a mile away. Offa's Dyke path is just across the river. Plus numerous footpaths, castles, ruins, ancient monuments and Chepstow racecourse.

How much? From £74 for a double room including breakfast. Four-course dinner £19.50.
