It’s usually a fantastic time of year wherever you are in the world – and can be even more exciting if celebrated somewhere unusual. Share your favourite memories of New Year abroad, that may have included local festivities or rituals, traditional food and drink, or being invited to an amazing party to see the year in. You may have spent New Year’s Day on an exotic beach or exploring a city. Wherever you were in the world, please share your tales of a New Year overseas.

If you have a relevant photo of the your celebrations, do send it in – but it’s your words that will be judged for the competition

Keep your tip to about 100 words

The best tip of the week, chosen by travel expert Tom Hall, will win a £200 voucher for a stay at a Sawday’s property – the company has more than 3,000 in the UK and Europe. The best tips will appear on the Guardian Travel website, and maybe the paper too.

We’re sorry, but for legal reasons you must be a UK resident to enter this competition.

The competition closes on Monday 21 December at 9am GMT
