An event billed as the “UK’s biggest indoor festival” has been cancelled after organisers decided it would be inappropriate to go ahead due to a series of serious incidents at its most recent event, the BoomTown Fair, which takes place near Winchester and was attended by 50,000 people.
Boom Town Fair said tickets for its debut Winter Gathering would not go on sale this week as organisers focus their attention on incidents at the event which took place last weekend, including the death of a festivalgoer, and a car park fire that destroyed 82 vehicles, leading to the evacuation of a section of the campsite.
An 18-year-old woman was found dead in her tent on Monday. Olivia Christopher, from Chesham in Buckinghamshire, is the fourth person to have died at BoomTown in the seven years since the festival started.
In an announcement made on its Facebook page, organisers of the Winter Gathering said: “[They] feel that it would not be appropriate at this time to go ahead with the event as previously planned”.
“Although there were many amazing things that happened at the festival last weekend, the incidents that did occur, we feel we should take some time to take stock of. As a very close team with so much love for the community that is created at BoomTown, we are absolutely devastated by the news of our festival attendee who tragically passed away. Our thoughts are with the young lady’s family, friends and loved ones.”
“We are also currently going through the process to follow up individually with all those affected by the fire, and feel that focussing our energy on these incidents is where it is best placed at this time.”
The Winter Gathering was due to take place at the Royal Bath and West showground, near Shepton Mallet, on 10 December, with six huge party arenas. Organisers had been planning the event for four years.
