We asked you to show us your retro holiday snaps to capture how things have changed for holidaymakers over the years. Last week we looked at the 60s. This week it's the 70s - with photos of Greek ferry trips, a day out to Warwick castle and lots of flares
Taking a break during a visit to Warwick Castle. "A golden wonder moment for me, mum, sister and aunty," says the reader who submitted it. "Must have been the seventies, check out those flares!" "We all suffered in the heat in our job lot pink/red cardies!" Photograph: Ali Rigby/GuardianWitnessPhotograph: Ali Rigby/GuardianWitness"Every kid used to dig a great big hole in the sand in the mid 70s didn't they?" says Michael Key. "Here's me with my latest effort enjoying a lolly in my very trendy pants!" Photograph: Michael David Key/GuardianWitnessPhotograph: Michael David Key/GuardianWitnessTaking a roadside break in Bodelwyddan, during a holiday to Llandudno. The regular trip involved: "packing four children into the back of the car with the inevitable quarrels as to who had the window seats." Photograph: LeedsTim/GuardianWitnessPhotograph: LeedsTim/GuardianWitnessThis stylish snap shows the reader and her mum on a trip to Powys Castle in July 1970. The photo was developed by her father. Photograph: HongKonger /GuardianWitnessPhotograph: Hongkonger/GuardianWitnessA fantastic shot taken at a caravan site in Barmston, 1976, filled with those orange hues so prevalent in photos from the decade. "Our grandad had a static caravan which we visited most summers," says Andrew Brook, whose sister is the girl in the photo. "Most of the site has disappeared now due to coastal erosion." "At school I was regarded as over-privileged because of the overseas holidays," says the reader who submitted the photo. "But Dad and Mum started touring Europe in a Morris Minor at the beginning of the 1960s. Recently I bought a van and renewed the tradition. A mattress in the back and a few camping bits is the extent of the facilities, so I'm probably roughing it more than we were back then." "Picnics from back of the estate were a feature of holidays in the 70's," he says. "I think my mum (centre) looks très chic. Guess which is me!" The trip involved hanging out on the pavement in Dunstable waiting for the bus to turn up. Photograph: mvmiaowsel/GuardianWitnessPhotograph: mvmiaowsel/GuardianWitnessThere's not such a happy ending to this roadside picnic in France, 1975. "After finishing our picnic, we set off to explore the meadow behind us only to find it was being used as a toilet for all and sundry," says the reader. "Worse still, we then realised that we had been sitting amid scatterings of dried human ordure and sun-crisped toilet paper. Dad did us the honour of bringing some into the car, stuck to the sole of his sandal."
