Take me there: Millendreath, Cornwall

A run-down holiday village on the south coast of Cornwall has been given a new lease of life with the opening of a beach club, café and villas (blackrockcornwall.co.uk). Millendreath became popular in the 1950s, but by the 1990s its chalets had fallen into disrepair. Now a £75m regeneration project will transform the village and coastal valley into an upmarket resort, with 150 luxury holiday homes and a spa, pool and restaurant. This summer the Black Rock Beach Club will offer surfing, kayaking and paddle-boarding, while the café will serve local organic produce. Five contemporary bungalows with sea views are available for rent so far, from £550 per week (cornishcollection.co.uk)

It's a good time to... go vintage

If the mere mention of cupcakes and bunting makes you bilious, you might wish to flee the country this summer, as our national love affair with all things vintage and whimsical looks set to reach fever pitch. Blame it on designer Wayne Hemingway, who seems to have cornered the market in nostalgic summer shindigs. He'll be taking his successful Vintage Festival – which celebrates the best of British music, fashion, art and film from the 20th century – north of the border for the first time with a two-day visit to Glasgow's Merchant City (27-28 July, merchantcityfestival.com/vintage).

In September the festival will pop up at Morecambe's art deco Midland Hotel as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations (14 September, midlandvintage.co.uk). Highlights include a 1930s tea dance, classic cars, fashion shows and street theatre.

Then it's off to Darlington for the first-ever Festival of Thrift, with craft workshops, pop-up allotments, talks on upcycling and foraging walks (21– 22 September, festivalofthrift.co.uk).

And if that's not enough to satisfy your craving for all things retro, Rough Guides has released a guidebook to Vintage London (£9.99), giving the lowdown on everything from the best second-hand clothing stores to the capital's finest art deco cafés.
