Take me there: The Peloponnese, Greece
EasyJet launches a new route from Gatwick to Kalamata next weekend, opening up one of Greece's most enigmatic and beautiful regions to UK travellers. Kalamata is the gateway to the Peloponnese, famed for its mountains, horse-shoe bays and the ancient site of Olympia. Stay in one of the beautiful villages on the Mani peninsula, which can now be reached via a 40-minute taxi transfer from Kalamata instead of a 300km drive from Athens. The Mani has no shortage of appealing family-run hotels, but the Liakoto apartments in Kardamili are hard to beat (anniska.gr). Twice-weekly flights start on 6 July, with one-way fares from £34.99 (easyjet.com)
It's a good time to... escape to the mountains
Twenty years ago a hotel room with a kettle and a trouser press would have been considered hi-tech. Today, even the most basic budget hotel will offer Wi-Fi and satellite TV. But after years of trying to outdo each other in the technology stakes, a handful of hotels and resorts are catching on to the idea that what some of us really want on holiday is the chance to unplug and unwind.
Montagne Alternative is a new retreat in the Swiss Alps offering families a "digital detox" (from €200 per room per night, montagne-alternative.com). Stay in converted farm buildings in a restored hamlet near Verbier, with no TV and limited Wi-Fi access, and enjoy activities such as visits to farms and cheesemakers, swimming in lakes, climbing, hiking and mountain biking. It's all about rediscovering the simple pleasures.
Try another wholesome experience in the Swiss Alps at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof (kronenhof.com) in Pontresina. Spend a day or night at a remote Alpine hut in the Engadine valley, far away from the distractions of social media. The package is valid for a minimum of two people and costs from £150pp, including transfers and a rustic three-course meal prepared by your own chef. Heidi, eat your heart out.
