beenthereapril: three towers of paine, Chile
Nora de Angelli: Some of the greatest landscapes on Earth are found in Torres del Paine national park in Chilean Patagonia. The best-known and most spectacular summits are the three towers, gigantic granite monoliths between about 2,260m and 2,500m high, shaped by the forces of glacial ice. You have to be extremely lucky with the weather in order to be able to see the three peaks, which are usually completely covered in clouds, hence the local nickname, The Smoky Towers. beenthereapril: waxbills, Kruger national park
Mike Hally: While travelling through Kruger national park in South Africa we were amazed by the vibrant colours of the birdlife almost as much as by the big game. These stunning little powder-blue waxbills were darting around a picnic spot and they looked particularly good when perched on the edge of this water butt, with drips of water down their chests and their reflections on the surface of the water. beenthereapril: Covaleda's cattle fair, northern Spain
Jorge Sanz: This picture was taken at a cattle fair held every September in Covaleda, a town in the province of Soria, northern Spain. Photograph: Jorge Sanz
beenthereapril: Easter celebrations in San Fernando, the Philippines
Jason Pemberton: Three penitents flagellate themselves in procession during Easter celebrations in the city of San Fernando, the Philippines. Photograph: Jason Pemberton
beenthereapril: Luna Park, Sydney, Australia
Rebecca Lewis: This was taken on a sunny afternoon in the Luna Park, Sydney, Australia. My friend and I were curious to explore the amusement park and weren't disappointed once we got inside. It was a bit of a nostalgia trip, and these three characters captured the moment beautifully. Photograph: Rebecca Lewis
beenthereapril: Penguins, Gold Harbour, South Georgia
Tricia Martyn: This picture was taken at Gold Harbour on South Georgia in the South Atlantic. The beach was full of king penguins, elephant seals and baby fur seals and there was a photo opportunity at every turn. King penguins are very inquisitive and were also very keen to show off, as was apparent from this trio in the photo. Photograph: Tricia Martyn
beenthereapril: Playing in the surf, Boracay island, Philippines
John Crux: I took this during a trip to Boracay island in the Philippines while walking along the beach. I spotted these three having a water fight at sunset and thought they'd make for some excellent silhouette shots. Photograph: John Crux
beenthereapril: marine iguanas, Galapagos islands
Matt Parry: The Galapagos islands are truly one of the most amazing places on earth. They contain so many endemic species, including these prehistoric-looking marine iguanas. These fascinating creatures can be found on many of the islands swimming in the cold waters or sunning themselves on the rocks. During the breeding season they like to gather on the rocks in large groups to mate. Photograph: Matt Parry
beenthereapril: Skydiving over Peterlee, County Durham
Ewan Cowie: I was lucky enough to take this photo of a friend completing his first ever skydive with his two instructors over Peterlee, County Durham, during a stunning sunset. I positioned myself so that the sun was directly behind the three skydivers, and was rewarded with this photo using my helmet mounted camera. It was a beautiful view, and makes me feel lucky to be a skydiver Photograph: Ewan Cowie
beenthereapril: mini icebergs on the shore, Iceland
Sophie Carr: At Jökulsárlón, south-east Iceland, small icebergs get washed from the base of the nearby glacier and into the sea, only to be washed up against the black volcanic sandy beach. The icebergs vary in size, colour and shape, and constantly change as they're battered by waves. This is a 30-second exposure, which makes the place look far calmer than it actually was. beenthereapril: three walkerss on Broadhaven headland, south Pembrokeshire
Chris Mole: Taken at Broadhaven, south Pembrokeshire, from the beach looking up to the headland. Photograph: Chris Mole
beenthereapril: tower blocks, Belgrade, Serbia
David Meredith: I had never seen tower blocks like these in Belgrade, Serbia, a really interesting city to visit. Photograph: David Meredith
Caswell beach, Gower, Wales
Roslin Zuha: A long weekend to the Gower peninsula involved a drive down to Caswell beach. I was somewhat disappointed as it was pouring with rain as I reached my destination but after a short wait in my car, the rain cleared and I headed onto the beach. The place was deserted apart from a drenched couple with their very wet dog. The dramatic clouds with the rock pool reflections made an eye catching scene. Photograph: Roslin Zuha
beenthereapril: horseriding on Alcaidesa beach, southern Spain
Donovan Torres, runner-up: During an early morning walk on Alcaidesa beach in southern Spain, I encountered these three horse riders trotting out of the water, with the famous Rock of Gibraltar as a majestic backdrop.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a stunning scene and a beautifully balanced composition. The quality seems to have gone a little awry with the digital file: it might be worth taking this one back to the original and reprocessing to see if this could be improved. Still, it's a deserved runner-up for such a well-balanced composition.

beenthereapril: A bicycle made for three, Shanghai
Juliette McCawley, runner-up: While in Shanghai, I caught sight of these off-duty soldiers in Century Park enjoying a ride and chased them till I got this shot.

Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a fun and quirky shot. Reminds me of the 1960s 'shoot from the hip' sort of genre. I love the fact that somewhere in the world, handsome men in uniform are cycling around on three-seater bikes. Cute.

beenthereapril: Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Rajasthan, India
Graeme Reynolds, winner: I captured this intriguing scene during a trip to Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Rajasthan in north-west India. As I watched them interact for several minutes, the two vividly coloured rose ringed parakeets at the front seemed as unconcerned about me as they were of their friend behind, who appeared to look down on them disapprovingly. The birds' tail feathers and the tree branches combined to make the shape of an "X", so the image shows two kisses!

Natalie Mayer, judge: Lovely composition, also beautifully timed - I love the fella in the back watching the camera, very funny. A little adjusting in some editing software could enhance the colours and tones (a little more colour saturation would be great) and make this image pop even more.
