Devon travel tips: time for cream tea in Clovelly

Clovelly, a privately owned estate, serves up wonderful views to go along with the Devon cream teas and crab sandwiches

Almost impossibly picturesque, the fishing village of Clovelly tumbles down to the Bristol Channel all lime-washed cottages, flower baskets and charm. Traffic-free and cobbled, it is the ideal place to meander and take tea. The best spot for a view of the cottages and returning fishermen is the Cottage Tea Rooms. Find a seat outside and enjoy Devon cream tea, crab sandwiches and pasties. The annual Herring festival in November is a reminder of a time when the "silver darlings" were plentiful and is a good excuse to visit in winter, when the crowds are fewer. Clovelly is part of a privately-owned estate and visitors pay an entrance fee that includes parking (£6.50 adults, £4 children, £17 family ticket). Park at the visitor centre at the top of the village and then wend your way down to the tea rooms.
