Escapism

So remote you can only access it by seaplane or helicopter, the new Berkeley River Lodge on Australia's Kimberley Coast is a set of ocean-view suites on a dune surrounded by lush bush land. Guests can spot dolphins, turtles and manta rays, learn aboriginal mudcrabbing techniques and boat past waterfalls.

Weird world

Jaws Fest, celebrating the "filming, experiences and memories" from the making of the film, at Martha's Vineyard island (aka Amity Island) takes place 9-12 August, when cast, crew and fans gather to enjoy exhibitions, beach parties and talks by the shark experts and stars, writers and artists behind the films. It's all to raise money for shark conservation.

Travel trash

When it comes to sweltering heat, you can forget trying to look chic in your Hermès silk scarf. The priority is keeping cool, which is why traffic police in India have put in thousands of orders for "neck cooling scarves". The scarf contains crystals that hold water – the water cools skin as it evaporates. It also comes in khaki green, which is so in this season.

What's new?

Campervans
The world can't have too many campervan hire companies, we say, so here's another. Arun Valley Campers (01798 839106, arunvalleycampers.co.uk, from £275 for an off-peak weekend to £695 for a week in peak season) is based in Amberley, West Sussex, handy for exploring the South Downs, Petworth House and Arundel. There's availability for the rest of the summer.

Tour operator
The Healthy Holidays Company (020-8968 0501, thehealthyholiday company.co.uk), which previously organised several group fitness and yoga retreats each year, has expanded to offer active holidays, from surfing in Portugal and Morocco to Tuscan luxury and family safaris. The new collection is tailor-made for individual trips, including personal trainers and masseurs on request.

Festival
There are still tickets left for one of the most interesting new UK music festivals. Festival No.6 (festival.number6.com, from £129pp weekend ticket) will bring New Order, Primal Scream, Spritualized, Everything Everything, Richard Hawley, King Creosote and more together in the spectacular coastal town of Portmeirion on 14-16 September. Stuart Maconie will host spoken word, comedy and poetry, including a talk by travel writer Jan Morris. There's also a discovery trail through the surrounding Gwyllt woodlands revealing stories and myths originating there. Accommodation is wide ranging, from tipis and pre-erected tents to seaside hotels, cottages and rooms in Castell Deudraeth.

Where's hot now? Bari, Italy: 31C

The capital of Puglia is one of the most affluent in southern Italy; home to designer shops, traditional seafood and a chic medieval quarter. And if you're in need of a little seclusion, the region's 800km coastline is the longest in Italy – that's a lot of beach.
