1. SK Clinic and Spa, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

Covering two floors of a stylishly decorated converted chapel, SK Clinic is spacious and chic. A prescriptive facial made dull skin radiant and the therapist delivered a professional, intuitive massage. With its impressive customer service and excellent treatment standards, SK Clinic is on a par with any Mayfair treatment rooms but at half the price.
We loved The individual treatment rooms. Each therapist adds decoration in their own style.
Treatment to try Pevonia Botanica prescriptive facial: 1 hour, £45.
Victory Chapel, 4 Northgate St, Bury St Edmunds (01284 748 470; skclinic.co.uk)

2. Uniquely Organic Ecospa, Hove, East Sussex

Friendly and affordable rooms offering fantastic, holistically oriented treatments. The massage was fabulous, the surroundings were calming and the naturally friendly staff puts you at ease from start to finish. There is no dedicated relaxation room but the team have done a great job of making a serene spa environment. We had an excellent treatment using delicious organic products in a friendly town spa – all without wincing at the price.
We loved The care taken over every sensory detail.
Treatment to try Pinks Boutique Power Massage: 90 minutes, £60.
40 Church Road, Hove (01273 726 973; uoecospa.com)

3. Floatworks, London Bridge, London

Floatworks is very much a flotation centre, not a spa in the traditional sense. There's no lounging about in robes here. However, if you're looking for hush and calm, and a break from your day-to-day concerns for an hour or so, you'll find it here. Alongside the nine private flotation rooms there are also two therapy suites offering complementary therapies and massage.
We loved Effortlessly drifting away to who-knows-where.
Treatment to try Flotation session: 1 hour, £45.
1 Thrale Street, Southwark, London SE1 (020 7357 0111; floatworks.com)

4. Alexandra House, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

This grand Victorian house is home to a spacious and welcoming set of treatment rooms, just minutes from the city centre. From the moment of arrival, you are made to feel relaxed. The lymphatic drainage massage and body mud masks were excellent and performed by a very skilled and experienced therapist. There are no pools or heat experiences, but there is a menu of effective holistic treatments using gorgeous Karin Herzog products, plus two cosy relaxation rooms to snuggle in afterwards.
We loved The hospitality and friendliness of the staff. Plus, they serve delicious cake. A slice of heaven just off the M62.

6. Dao Spa, Victoria, London

Perfectly positioned to de-stress London commuters, these smart and men-friendly treatment rooms offer massage and holistic therapies. Dao is a small spa and so sensibly concentrates on a narrow range of Eastern-inspired wellbeing treatments. Treatments were authentic, effective and well worth the price. The facilities at Dao are quite spartan, but that seems to suit the therapies.
We loved Dao Spa's range of 30-minute treatments. They are ideal for office workers and commuters.
Treatment to try Thai yoga massage: 1 hour, £55.
28 Buckingham Palace Road, London SW1 (020 7630 8808; dao-spa.co.uk)

7. Aqua Sana at Center Parcs, locations nationwide

Aqua Sana spas are perfect for parents in need of an escape. Though you may not find perfect solitude, you will find an affordable, sociable spa with a menu of excellent treatments to help you unwind. Day guests are also welcome, so you don't need to be on a family holiday to enjoy Aqua Sana's impressive facilities. The globally inspired experiences range from the Turkish hammam and Tyrolean sauna to the Japanese salt steam bath and Greek herbal bath.
We loved Swimming in the outdoor pool, surrounded by the peaceful forest. Try a Twilight Spa session for a swim under the stars.
Treatment to try Harmony dual treatment – a back, neck and shoulder massage, plus a prescriptive facial: 55 minutes, £125 for two.

8. Crieff Hydro Hotel, Perthshire

Crieff Hydro Hotel is a family- friendly resort which offers an extensive range of hotel and self-catering accommodation. There are more than 40 indoor and outdoor leisure activities to suit guests of all ages. The Victorian spa is a peaceful and comfortable haven with its own adults-only pool and reviving spa therapies. The soothing face and back treatment was skilfully delivered and the effects were visibly dramatic.
We loved The fact parents can indulge in some me-time. There is a crèche and free group childcare sessions are available for children aged 2-12.
Treatment to try Soothing face and back treatment: 70 minutes, £72.

A short drive from Belfast, the resort is set in 163 acres of picturesque woodland, with dramatic views of the River Maine. The resort features a thermal spa, an infinity hydrotherapy pool and a peaceful relaxation room. The changing rooms feature little touches of decadence.
We loved Sitting in the outdoor hot tub, gazing out over the river and forest.
Treatment to try The midweek spa break includes a Mud Serail treatment, a massage or express facial, use of the thermal spa, plus accommodation, breakfast and dinner from £135pp per night.

10. Lido Spa, Bristol

This spa is an oasis of calm and tranquillity, with great attention to detail, top-class treatments and divine food. Much reclaimed wood from the original Victorian lido has been used in the renovations, including the beams in the poolside bar and the barrel showers which line the pool. You will be blissed out by the unusual holistic treatments and tasty, locally sourced food in the restaurant.
We loved The eco-friendly outdoor infinity pool.
A treatment to try Lido pregnancy massage and facial: 2 hours, £108.
