I'll never go back to ...
Tenerife. I went on a cheap last-minute holiday for some winter sun and it was awful. The brochure showed one hotel, but in reality there were three forming an unholy triptych around the pool. Sun worshippers lay around the pool like grilled cocktail sausages. And everyone was wearing their team's away strip - well, they were abroad.
My top travel tip is ...
wear a hoodie on planes. There is always freezing cold air conditioning blasting away in your direction and dehydrating you. Wearing a hoodie will stop it. Try to remember to take sharp items such as nail kits out of your hand luggage. I always forget.
My ideal travelling companion is ...
my wife. She handles the labels and padlocks on the baggage and generally takes care of business.
My favourite hotel is ...
Punta Islita in Costa Rica. It is cheap, but as close to paradise as you can get with the best bar on Earth. You can watch whales from there and the beer's ice cold. And for a city hotel, the Mandarin Oriental in New York is crazily good.
The luxury I can't live without is ...
a special beach shirt I bought in Marbella years ago. It's made of this soft waffle cotton and it's so comfortable when you're a little bit burnt. I go mad if I can't find it when I'm packing to go away.
My top holiday activity is ...
deep sea fishing. The Hotel del Rey in San Jose, Costa Rica, is a great base, and has the Blue Marlin bar, which is a hang-out for sport fishermen. It also has the best steak, a casino, superb cold beer and that whole Hemingway vibe.
My first trip was ...
sailing with my dad around the Sporades islands in Greece when I was a teenager. I experienced my first earthquake there. I was in a taverna and it felt as if someone had lifted my chair.
I always bring back ...
dark rum and shoes. I don't know why, but I can't resist buying beach shoes - flip flops or whatever - wherever I go.
My favourite place is ...
the Isle of Man. There is a real charm and energy to the place that makes it really quite magical. The coast is rugged, there are fantastic beaches and beautiful countryside.
On holiday I listen to ...
the local music. I'll often buy world music or CDs from India and Latin America.
