Hands up anyone who's considered a weekend break to Patras? Thought not. But that could be about to change. This week sees the start of a host of exhibitions, theatrical performances, music and poetry readings to mark the city's status as 2006 European Capital of Culture. Add to that the new Primarolia Art Hotel (arthotel.gr) - which doubles as an art gallery and overlooks the harbour - and you have the makings of a fine weekend break. Greece specialist Filoxenia (01653 617959, filoxenia.co.uk) offers a weekend from £498pp including return Heathrow-Athens flights with BA, private taxi transfer to Athens bus or train station (pay locally for travel to Patras), and B&B accommodation at the Primarolia in a twin room with sea view (extra night £52pp).
