Riverside Hotel, Ambleside

This five-room B&B has a foreboding appearance from the outside. But the interior is lovingly restored, and the Lake District welcome is as friendly as they come.

Address: Under Loughrigg, Ambleside, LA22 9LJ.

Tel: 015394 32395.

First impressions: Despite its tranquil setting by the river Rothay, this five-room B&B has a foreboding appearance from the outside. But the interior is lovingly restored, and the Lake District welcome is as friendly as they come.

What are the rooms like? Inoffensive in white but full of homely touches such as chocolates, wine glasses and herbal teas.

The bed test: Standard rooms have comfortable king-size beds; or you could go for the four-poster.

The bathroom: Two rooms have a spa bath. It makes a racket and the bubbles don't do much, but it's a talking point.

The restaurant: No restaurant, but Ambleside is just 10 minutes' walk away. Breakfast is hearty English or continental; you're also given a print-out of the morning headlines and weather reports.

The bar: No bar as such, but there is a respectable wine list. Enjoy a bottle in front of a wood-burning fire or on the attractive garden terrace.

What is there to do nearby? In a word, walking. Nearby Loughrigg Fell isn't high, but you can scramble among the crags. More active types can walk the famous Fairfield Horseshoe from the hotel without even taking the car.

How much? £33pp for a standard double in low season, £48pp for a four-poster in summer.
