Ordering equipment online

Ordering equipment online has plenty of advantages - delivery is relatively cheap, prices are competitive, and you don't have to carry your kit home, either.

Best overall site

Fieldandtrek.com Delivery £3.99

With a vast range of sleeping bags from £20, two-person tents from £50, and family-sized and specialist tents, this is the best of all the sites reviewed. It also sells anti-mosquito devices and midge repellents.

Runner-up

Cotswold-outdoor.com Delivery £5

Sells the cheapest two-person tent that I could find (£35) as well as cleaning kits for ageing canvas. There is also a very good and comprehensive gear guide at cotswold-outdoor.com/html/gearguides/sleeping_guide.jphtm.

Best of the rest

Millets.co.uk Delivery £3.50

Cheap, but nothing special, and the choice is limited.

Blacks.co.uk Delivery £3.50

Stocks a basic range that will appeal to occasional campers and festival-goers.

Snowandrock.co.uk Delivery £2.50 (up to £100)

An unnecessarily tricky website that makes it hard to see the impressive range on offer.

Ellis-brigham.com Delivery £2.50-£6

One for the ambitious mountaineer who already has a good idea of brands.
