As easyJet announced £48m losses this week, some of its rivals were launching new routes from regional airports.
Passengers from Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds-Bradford will soon be able to take cheap flights to Faro, capital of the Algarve. MyTravelLite (Mytravellite.com) launches a daily Birmingham to Faro service on June 14, claiming that its fares, starting at £28 including taxes, will be the lowest from any UK airport.
First Choice Holidays (air2000.com) will offer daily charter flights to Faro from Manchester from Thursday to Sundays from July 3. These are aimed at independent travellers with fares starting at £29, including taxes, and in-flight catering. Daily flights from Manchester to Málaga and Alicante will begin on July 1.
Jet2 (jet2.com) will include daily flights from Leeds-Bradford in its winter schedule from September 4, with fares from £39 including taxes. It will also launch flights to Prague in the winter from £29 including taxes. Jet2 has asked northern passengers to email their preferences for two skiing routes this winter. This follows the success of a similar exercise before the airline's launch.
