Good cheap hotels in Prague

Can anyone recommend a decent (clean and presentable) and reasonably priced hotel (max £50 per night for a double room) in the centre of Prague?

· In April, a group of us stayed in the hotel Aron, a five- to 10-minutes tram ride to the centre. Very friendly, English speaking staff with clean, presentable rooms and a bar and restaurant serving acceptable food at reasonable prices. Tram tickets available from the reception desk.

· We can highly recommend the Cloister Inn. Situated in the centre, on the site of a former convent, a few minutes walk from the Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge, it was great value (4,200 koruna per room per night, around pounds 80) for a large, spotless and comfortable twin with all usual amenities and an excellent buffet breakfast. Alternatively, you could try the attached pension run by the same people at just 1,200 koruna per twin per night.

· We stayed at the Hotel Salvator in Truhlarska 10, Prague 1, which is about a five- to 10-minute walk from the Old Town Square. Smallish room, but en-suite with buffet breakfast included. Near to Namesty Republiky underground station. They will also will pick you up from the airport on request.

· Domus Henrici seems more like a set of private flats rather than a hotel. It is not the cheapest, but it is very near your price limit.

Fantastic view, only about 200m metres walk from the castle, practically opposite the Loreto Chapel, only a very short walk from the circular 22 tram route (admittedly those trams are a potential pickpockets' paradise, but just be careful), good breakfast, lovely rooms and good service. I was sceptical about paying a touch extra, but being in such a quite room so close to the castle made up for it, as did the chilled out atmosphere and friendly and helpful staff. They've even got a deal with a taxi driver who doesn't rip you off!

· We stayed in the Julian Hotel, Elisky Peskove, Prague 5 about 18 months ago. It is on the border between the Mala Strana and Smichov districts and was about a 10-15 minute walk to the Charles Bridge. It was clean and well furnished but not flashy. Unfortunately I don't know the price as it was part of a special deal but it doesn't feature in the guides as a starred hotel.

· Regrettably, Prague is becoming more and more expensive although a 10 minute metro ride will take you to Hotel Ilf in Prague 4. It's a clean and presentable hotel with en suite rooms. It's website is www.hotel-ilf.cz

· Two years ago, we had a very pleasant holiday in Prague, staying (B&B) in the Hotel Salvator, near the Old Town Square. Our "suite" included a large double bedroom, separate bedroom and bathroom! It was certainly under £50 when we stayed there. We also enjoyed some of our meals at the adjacent South American restaurant. We booked through Czechers (01706 623689, h.hagan@czechers.co.uk) who gave excellent service, both on this occassion and on a more recent trip to Budapest. We found that if we gave details of exactly what we wanted, they would do everything they could to find a hotel that accommodated our needs. They provided helpful tips and information about surviving holidays in Prague and Budapest and were usually able to reply to emails requesting information by return.
