· I've spent a lot of time in Turkey and felt perfectly safe - even during the build up to the war in Iraq. I stood in the middle of Ankara and watched the England vs Turkey World Cup on a big screen television along with several thousand other people and I could not see any other Europeans. There wasn't the slightest hint of trouble - just curiosity. Try that as a Turkish citizen in London!
Most Turkish people are very kind and understand that most intelligent Europeans do not support the war with Iraq.
Go and enjoy your visit.

· No, you shouldn't cancel your trip. Istanbul is some 1400km from the Iraqi border - a long way from any military action. You are also extremely unlikely to face any personal animosity. In fact, the opposite is likely to be true. The warmth of Turkish hospitality is famous, and with tourism reportedly down 70%, you will certainly be made to feel very welcome. What's more, with fewer tourists around, visiting the sights will be more pleasant and your holiday proportionately better. Having lived in Istanbul in the mid-90s, I travel to Istanbul every year, and this year will be no exception. I, too, have a flight booked for mid-April.

· There is no reason to cancel. Istanbul is probably safer than England.

· If I were you, I wouldn't panic. I'm a Brit myself, and I teach there. I have just travelled to London, Cuba and Montreal in the last month. Tell you what, I'd rather fly into Istanbul than use the horrendous Tube system in London, not to mention the rude taxi drivers who think they own the world. Go ahead and enjoy your trip. I'm sure you will be given a very warm welcome from the very charming Turks.

·It seems no-one can answer this question but yourself. Who can predict what will happen in the near future? There is only one consant in Turkey, and that is change. I live in Istanbul and I have heard the rumble of B52s flying overhead. It's true that this is a fabulous city. You will receive the famous hospitality and see things that will surprise and enrich you. As for your personal safety, no-one can guarantee that. Heed your own counsel.
