First impressions: Set in a tiny fishing village tucked deep into a cleft in the cliffs of the north Yorkshire coast, The Endeavour is more than 200 years old, with bags of character. It looks like a smuggler's inn, but, actually, it's a restaurant with three newly refurbished ensuite rooms.
The rooms: Ask for the one looking out to the seabird cliff, and a colourful jumble of rooftops stretching to the beach.
The bathroom: Brand spanking new, with gleaming chrome, fluffy robes and piping hot water - heaven after a trudge along the coast.
The food: Fresh seafood is the owners' passion, and they buy from the daily catch brought in by local boats. There are two dining rooms, one with cosy wood panelling, one bright with blue table linen. The menu includes Staithes lobster with garlic and hazelnut butter, wild turbot with apple and calvados sauce and scallop risotto. Interesting meat and vegetarian dishes also feature. For pudding, the house speciality is the softest, creamiest crème brûlée. A three-course dinner with coffee and wine costs just under £70 for two. Booking in advance is advisable in summer, required November-February.
What is there within walking distance? A late-night stroll along a winding road brings you to the harbour where waves crash and seagulls screech, and bits of cliff crumble into the sea.
What is there within driving distance? Whitby. Visit the famous Fortunes smokehouse to see golden, oak-smoked kippers glistening with oily goodness, or walk along the wharf as the boats are docking - it's always good to see where last night's supper came from.
How much? From £55-£65 a night for a double room with exceptional breakfast.
