For over a quarter of a century, the Good Hotel Guide has been leading its readers to hotels of character. The volume covering continental Europe comes out next week featuring 1,000 hotels in 18 countries in mainland Europe. The Guide takes no money from the hotels, and no advertising. It is best described as word of mouth in print, since much of the information comes from reports sent in by readers throughout the year. The hotels range from quite big ones, particularly in cities, to pensions , chteaux, manor houses and B&Bs. France has the largest number of entries by far (400): it is particularly well endowed with the personally run places that are favoured by readers of the guide.

A word of advice

When you arrive, take a good look round the room you have been given, to make sure that it is what you want. Some hotels give you their most expensive room as a matter of course; some think you won't discover until too late that it is noisy. If you have any doubts, insist on being shown alternatives before you start unpacking.
