Avon House, Cawsand, Cornwall

Cosy, eclectic and brilliant value. We had a large double room with a window seat and a view of the sea. Lying in bed, you could watch the ships steaming in or out of Plymouth.

First impressions: A small B&B in the heart of an ancient Cornish smuggling village. To get there, you have to cross the Tamar river from Plymouth - either on the foot ferry or the car ferry - and then travel a few miles across a peninsula. The views on the final descent into Cawsand are magnificent, and the village is as good as unspoilt: enormous sea walls, a pebble beach and roads just about wide enough for one car. Avon House, a listed building, sits on the tiny street that runs along the seafront. It's clearly someone's house, as well as a B&B, but the owners are lovely. You can park free at the back of the buildings.

What are the rooms like? Cosy, eclectic and brilliant value. We had a large double room with a window seat and a view of the sea. Lying in bed, you could watch the ships steaming in or out of Plymouth. There was a TV (although with rubbish reception), tea- and coffee-making facilities, and plenty of room for cases and piles of clothes.

The bed test: Wide, clean and jolly comfortable.

And the bathroom? Ours was semi-detached from our room, and it was never entirely clear if we were sharing it with someone else - but again, clean and perfectly adequate.

Is there a restaurant? No, but the breakfast is excellent value, and there are good pubs nearby for lunch and dinner.

What is there to do nearby? The walks along the coast in both directions are wonderful. Closer to home, there are watersports in the summer. The village - which is actually made up of two villages, Cawsand and Kingsand, for complex historical reasons - also has some sweet little craft shops. And, of course, there are the pubs.

How much? We paid £32 a night between two of us for a double room and breakfast.
