First impressions: The Royal York Hotel stands majestically just outside the ancient city walls and looms up at you as you come out of the railway station, which is conveniently right next door. This late-19th century hotel has three acres of private gardens and impressive views over York Minster and the River Ouse.
What are the rooms like? Standard and unimaginative furnishings and fittings, but towelling robes and a folder of helpful tourist information leaflets help to make up for the lack of personal touch.
The bed test: Crisp cotton sheets and soft pillows ensure a comfy night's sleep.
The bathroom test: Luxuriously deep bath, and a powerful over-the-bath shower. Abundance of fluffy towels on the heated rail.
The restaurant: The food is freshly prepared and offers traditional British fare at £22.50 for three courses. The variety of the breakfast buffet - chocolate muffins, fruit, croissants and a fry-up - makes up for the occasionally slow service. Expect to queue for a table if you come down to after 9am at weekends.
What is there to see within walking distance? A 10-minute walk will bring you into the centre of York. Visit York Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeon and the National Railway Museum. Retail therapy available in the market and several small craft and gift shops. The Shambles, a cobbled street lined with timber-framed shops is worth a visit, too.
Within driving distance? Stately grandeur at Harewood House and Bird Garden, and Castle Howard, both just outside the city. Also visit the Viking centre at Danelaw Village, and the Yorkshire Air Museum.
How much a night? £61pp per night based on two sharing, including full breakfast. Superbreak can also arrange special deals for rail travel.
